Default Transmission HELP ME!!

I have a 1999 RX300 3.0L AWD. I recently took it to my friends boyfriend in Charlotte to have him replace both knock sensors. Which he done for me. On my drive back home, an hour and a half away, the car preformed AMAZING. Ran like a brand new one. Since I have had it, it had been in limp mode. So it was a totally different car. Got it home, parked it. Got in it the next morning, went to a friends house. Went to leave, backing out it sounded and felt like I hit something. Tried to keep backing up, it just kept jerking then wouldnt move at all. Tried to go forward, it was revving really high before it would pull at all. When it would shift into 2nd gear, it sounded like all hell was breaking loose. Needless to say I had it hauled home. What Im asking is, 1st-what the hell happened? 2nd-do I need to have the transmission rebuilt? 3rd-HELP ME!!!! I love this car.

it can be a transmission issue, but let a competent mechanic come up with a diagnosis. Then ask the shop to recommend repairs and possible alternatives.

Yeah that doesn’t sound like a DIY job.

Best of luck, I love my RX too.

For what it is worth. I had a transmission failure on an entirely different vehicle (it was a Mercedes) and the shop I took it to charged me about $850 just to take it apart and tell me that the transmission was shot, and it needed a replacement transmission.

I am not suggesting not to get a diagnostic, but if the diagnostic is very expensive and they want to tear it apart, consider just putting that cost toward a replacement transmission, as it sounds like that could be likely.

A reasonably priced diagnostic would be worthwhile in the event it is something that can be resolved without a complete replacement.

Best of luck on this issue.

Has anyone ever had success just refurbishing the valve body assembly?
It's readily accessible with the transmission still in the car, right above the transmission filter

Only success I acheoved was getting it back together. I was able to pull and test the solenoids and all checked out ok. Didn’t fix the issue of hard shifting though and I quickly sold the car.

If you attempt it, know that there are small metal ***** that can drop out and roll away if you’re not careful. Also there is a paper gasket that tears easily (mine did) and I considered myself lucky to get a replacement from a tranny shop in Houston.
