Tranny left me...stranded 🤦♂️
My tranny has been jerking when accelerating mainly first gear every other 30 45 mins during city driving finaly it gave in and wouldn't go when shifting to reverse it makes a ugly noise is there a way to ask for a Toyota tranny that will fit that is less expensive as soon as I say lexus it's another story keep in mind it's a 1999 with 150xxx also check engine light has yet to go on. Can some one help me either with a less expensive transmission or and alternate transmission that will be fine it's awd by the way thanks

Use car-part.com to find a replacement. In theory the 2001-2003 Highlander has the same unit but there may be some differences not sure.

Are you planning to do the swap yourself or let a shop do it for you. If you go the shop route, let them find and fit the transmission and provide you the warranty. If you are planning to do it yourself, I would suggest getting an exact match [model/make]. It is not worth fabricating something to fit.
Out of curiosity, did you examine the fluid?

I am simply trying to caution you that if YOU intend to purchase a replacement transmission then return/warranty issue is going to be your problem. If you let the shop/mechanic acquire the transmission, then they should provide you the warranty. You can check with Lexus and I expect 5-6K cost of transmission replacement ... that is the worst case repair cost (best guess). I would not be surprised if local Lexus farms the job to a sub-contractor, but they should be have re-furbished transmission available [COVID based supply-chain problems may exist].

Less than 3 grand

If the rest of the car is in good shape this is a good option.

The mechanic I'm going with is a family friend and has done work for everyone in the family and will fix what ever needs fixing after he will be picking it up Ina couple hours if it is a transmission he will be giving me a Christmas gift discount lol those are his words he is really giving me a beak as we found a used transmission from a car getting parted out the total cost for the transmission and labor is going to be around 800 to 1100 (300 for tranny 500 for labor
maybe extra 300 to change a few things while he's down there which is awesome he really giving me a break

Make sure you ask him to replace rear main seal and axle seals.
For your sake, I would be concerned about the state of the used transmission. I would have opted for a refurbished with improved parts. You are writing the check so the risk vs gain should be thought about. Some times in life, good relations can be soured by a well meaning (good gesture) attempt but with a bad part. I do hope things work out in your favor.

There is a talk about steel planetary gear upgrade. Ask your mechanic to do the research or dig yourself.
I had no issues with my transmission till the vehicle got totaled [over 250K miles]. The discussion is all over the place as well serviced and neglected have failed. And rightfully so, only the folks who had problems voiced their concerns while a good number of folks who had no issues never countered it. This issue has been hashed over and over.

if you plan on keeping the car for a few years...I would NOT put in a used transmission. Either install a new transmission or have it rebuilt buy a shop that knows what they are doing. Transmissions are a special breed in their own. If it were me, I would find a transmission only shop that works on Toyota transmissions.
