Question Price for a 2000 CPO?

Hi. My wife really wants an RX300. I found a 29K Black/Grey model which is real clean, and has the certified warranty. They had a price of $29400 on the window but quickly told me that the "new" price was $27500. I made what I thought was a fair offer of 25,700 but they said that they won't budge from the 27.500 price as they had over 26K in the car and the warranty "cost them" a grand. I find this real hard to believe. Should I pass on this one and keep looking? Or has Lexus CPO sales become so hot that people are banging down the door to pay that kind of price for a 4 year old car?

I think you made a fair offer. Look elsewhere.

I have been buying preowned lexus's for 10 years with the exception of a 2002 es300 leased for my business and all have been trouble free great purchases. And I was going to buy a CPO rx300 like you but I got a great deal on a non CPO 2002 rx300 4WD 13000 miles for 30 grand. My logic was I wouldnt get the 3year 100k warranty but on the other hand i did inherit the 4/48 bumper to bumper and 6/70 powertrain so a recent non CPO lexus is another option to ponder.

I looked long and hard for a good deal on a used RX. I compared eBay and most of the dealerships in Dallas, Houston, OKC, and KC over a 3 month period. I was finally able to buy a 2000 non-CPO with 41K miles from the dealership in OKC for $21,000. They were asking $25,900, but finally relented when I convinced them that I was ready to buy NOW, had the cash, and would go elsewhere where I could get a deal in this price range. Watch what they sell for on eBay and print out the ads and show them to the dealership. Your offer was more than fair IMO.

The best way to get a good deal is to be prepared to walk if you don't like what they offer. Let them know that you are serious and want to buy the car, but at a fair price. That price is a tad on the high side, but for a CPO and the warranty you get it may be worth it. If you buy an equivalent non CPO RX300 for $2,500 less, then that's a decision you have to make. I just bought my 2000 CPO RX300 back in July and looked at about 10 of them before I got the deal I wanted. I ended up paying $26,000 for a 2000 w/40k in prestine conditon. No scratches, dings, nicks, etc. I could have bought a non CPO that wasn't as prestine and no extended warranty and saved 3-4k, but to me, it wasn't worth it.

I also find it hard to believe that they are into the vehicle for 26k. I would think that the number is more like 22-24 based on what a friend of mine tells me what they go for at the auctions. It does cost the dealer more to have it inspected to be able to sell it as a CPO, but it isn't $1000.

Good luck in your RX300 hunt!

My friend bought a 2000 RX RWD blk/gray for $27.5k just this March.

Her car had less than 18k miles when she bought it.

I think mileage is a very big factor when it comes to price for any car. I've seen a few 2000 RXs going for less than $20k nowadays but these are generally cars with very high mileage.

i just bought mine a month ago. its a silver rx300 2WD. I paid 21500/- for mine and it came with their standard CPO warranty. Make sure to quote 3000/4000 less than what their best offer is...then you can work out a number somewhere in between, which i think is usually a fair price. good luck!
