Gen3 rx vs gen2 Highlander rear brake upgrade?
Using the '08-'13 Highlander rear rotors....
The pads dictate which calipers to use...
So which pads, would you'd use? The 3 gen rx pads or the 2 gen Highlander pads? Longer & narrower or a wider/ shorter pad? Longiitude taper wear (front side) vs radial taper wear (outer side).....

That's a good question, I still can't decide which one I prefer more but I think when it comes down to it, the gen 3 RX wins over the gen 2 HL due to the availability of calipers (produced for twice as long - 2010-2020 vs 2008-2013), pads and aftermarket support. As for how they perform, it should in theory be about equal.
For everyone else watching, you'll need to modify your stock dust shields to fit a larger rotor - otherwise you can swap to the 2008-2013 Highlander or 2009-2015 Toyota venza ones. The 2nd gen HL has a 41.3mm piston vs 40.45mm for the 3rd gen RX, the 2nd gen has a slightly larger body, weighs a little more and has half the hardware clips so it is easier to service. I like how the 3rd gen RX pad goes further down the rotor, looks a little better to me. I would skip both calipers and get the gen 3 RX euro to get a 310x18mm vented rear rotor. To compare lower swept area, they do look pretty similar though.
Both 2HL and 3RX rear brake pads have a thickness of 10mm

Thanx Matt for your input.......I find the pads are a few dollars difference (Hawk ceramic performance) & a pr of reman rx calipers are a additional $28. vs the Highlander calipers. Whats up w/ all those additional clips/shims ect using the rx calipers?

The 2nd gen HL rear calipers are made by Akebono and the 3rd gen RX calipers are made by Advics. In terms of design, the 3rd gen rear calipers seem to resemble the 3rd gen RX / 2nd gen HL front ones more as they are also Advics and have very similar clips. The 2HL caliper has the good ol' one big clip on the bottom and top that holds the pads, whereas the 3rd gen RX one has a clip on each corner.
