Default transfer box rear seal

so my transfer box rear seal has been leaking and has led to a bearing collapse. At least I hear a clunk or clink on coming in and out of drive
have rammed it full of oil and am going to drive away at it meantime, checking the oil every month or so. No noise or vibration once the car is actually driving, but will get a clunk on coasting to halt though once the throttle/drive has come off

in all the writeups about changing the oil seal at the end of the extension housing, nobody describes unbolting the extension housing and doing the oil seal on the bench. Is this not possible?

I'm thinking that if I could unbolt the extension part of the transfer box I could change the seal on the bench, this would be considerably easier than dropping the transfer box out

any experience on this guys?
