Default Front Subframe Cover / Splash Shield Install

Some RXs have these plastic protective covers, but mine never had them. Maybe it has to do with the fact that it is a Japan-made non-hybrid RX, or maybe somebody ripped them off at one point of the car's life before it fell into my hands. On our 2014 RX350 I noticed there's a splash shield under the front subframe that keeps crud off the surface and probably has some small aerodynamic benefits as well. As we know, the 10-15 RX / 08-19 Highlander etc have the same front subframe as our 2nd gens, so I had no doubt this was going to fit. There's a few options for these covers and their shapes vary a little, but they all achieve the same thing and cost about the same off Rockauto. Try to get an OEM one if you can, as the aftermarket ones are pretty cheaply made and the price reflects that. I had to do some trimming to get them to fit. I always thought he center covers were annoying as you have to remove two 10mm bolts to access the oil filter, and it blocks servicing the transfer case, so I only wanted the "rearward" cover

Options:
Original style - 51442-48010 / 51442-0E010 / 51442-48021 (2004-2006 RX330, 2007-2009 RX350)
Hybrid style - 51442-48021 (2006-2008 RX400h, 2006-2010 Highlander Hybrid, 2008-2009 Highlander)
Newer style - 51442-0E020 / 51442-0E040 / 51442-48040 (2010-2015 RX350, 2011-2020 Sienna, 2010-2019 Highlander) - Has the most amount of coverage and room for an aftermarket exhaust, I put this one on my car

Older style (top), compared to newer style (bottom). The newer style is a slightly more streamlined and has a little more coverage although fitment is identical

Hybrid style - this one is symmetrical and looks the best, but seems to have the least coverage and room for an aftermarket exhaust (It also appears to be the most accurate knock-off)

Hardware needed:
2x 51455-0E010 / 51455-0E020 / 51455-0E050 (Front subframe clips)
2x M6 - 10 bolts (90080-11718)
2x 10mm hex screws (90080-15094)

The M6 bolts are the same ones used for the front engine cover (I used stainless https://www.toyotanation.com/threads...cover.1780743/). The front clips that fasten the shield to the subframe are proprietary and are not available as an aftermarket knockoff. The problem is they're INSANELY Expensive! Cost me about 20 CAD each. Get these from the junkyard if you can, although most of the time they're brittle and will break. Refusing to get screwed a second time, I will be 3D printing these for my Highlander. I have recreated some that I plan on test-fitting then uploading to Thingyverse so you guys can 3D print them for yourselves too!

Onto the install!

It would be a good idea to clean the M6 holes where the back of the cover sits, as mine were very rusty as a cover was never used here being that my RX350 is a base model Japan-made car

This is the way the cover goes. M6 bolts at back, clips + screws at front

Due to aftermarket crap being aftermarket crap, I had to use some scissors to trim back some of the plastic where the shield slides into the clip. It sits too far forward so you can't screw it in. Also the hole on the driver side for some reason was not made far forward enough, so you'll need to enlarge it a bit too. After that, it'll fit

All done!

I bought that cover for my '11 RX. Spent about an hour under there the other day and couldn't figure it out. I felt pretty stupid. Thanks for showing which way round it goes... I'll try again.

You got this! I'm surprised it doesn't have any arrows to help guide the cover in. I had to look at my 2014 RX for a good while to see where all the clips went and how many bolts it had/used etc.
