When I smell it, it normally is strong. I don't carre if the odor is outside, but the point I am making is that IF you smell it INSIDE the car, exhaust must be getting in somehow? So even if the convertor is bad, it should NOT be smelled INSIDE.

I always use recirculated air myself. On the few instances where my engine revvs up to 5-6K rpm, that smell comes in, seems like thru the A/C vents. That is the only time I can smell it.
