Default RX330 Gas Tank Capacity and Trip Computer

Either in this forum or the "other one", there was a discussion about RX330 gas mileage. In that thread, someone threw out the statement that the trip computer performs your trip mileage and miles remaining computation based on 16 of the 19.2 gallon capacity in our gas tank. And when the miles remaining hits zero, that's how you know you've got 3 gallons left in your tank (give or take).

The thread continued, and everyone apparently took this statement to be absolutely true. I have never heard this or read this information anywhere (including the manual). Can someone either verify this statement, or let me know what the real deal is?

Anecdotally, the statement seems about right (give or take a gallon) in my experience, but I would be surprised to have someone verify that I still have about 60 miles or so left in my tank after hitting zero (granted that one wouldn't want to run the tank dry).

Thanks in advance!

That sounds about right. I've not really tempted fate yet by running too far after that warning light comes on, but I've come to depend on at least 30 additional miles - even though the trip computer hit zero a while back - before I really start to sweat. Usually I still have about a gallon or gallon and a half remaining in the tank when I refill at that point. I guess I'd rather have that trip computer be a pessimist . . .

I usually start looking for gas as the gauge falls below 1/4 when on an unfamiliar road. I get a little less picky as the miles go by. By the time the warning light goes on, I'm starting to worry. Now in a familiar city, I don't even worry about gas at all until the light comes on. So far, SO FAR, I've either been right . . . or lucky.

that statement is correct - lexus, in particular, seems to be pretty conservative on the low fuel light. 3 gallons is about right, meaning you have got about 50 miles left. i have pushed it quite a few times, and for the first time in my life, i ran out of gas a few months ago! but there were some extenuating circumstances that my husband reminded me of. normally i drive myself around, so going 30-40 miles is no sweat. but that day i was already on low fuel, i had 4 people in the car, and we were traveling with some luggage, and then to top it all off, we were traveling uphill to costco. and then i broke down about 150 yards from the gas station.

so yes, you have some wiggle room, but keep in mind your driving patterns to figure out how far you can really go!
