oil filter

I won't take the risk. Toyota, even though reliable, is infamous for oil-grime build-up in the engine if you wait for too long between oil change. I religiously follow the oil change schedule with my 100k miles Previa and my 115K miles Supra (oil change every 3750 miles at most), and I use Mobil 1 in my Supra also (although not the new 15,000 mile one). I would rather use cheap dino oil from good brand and change more often, than pushing the envelope.
About the oil filter, it depends on your driving condition and habit. BMW use synthetic and the computer calculate when you should change the oil base on the engine load, and usually it's about once every 12,500 miles to 15K miles. But as I recall, their oil filter is quite a bit larger than the Toyota's, and for a 3.0L 3 Series I think it's using 8 qt or oil, compares to my Supra which use less than 6 qt.

Agreed. The only reason there is a history of oil sludge problems on the RX300 is because many people didn't change the oil often enough. You should never let oil go 15,000 miles, period. All oils - "dino" and synthetic - are designed to hold dirt in solution. While synthetics are probably better at that than dino oil, ithe amount of dirt is the same. Leaving the oil in longer just means there is more dirt in the oil, and that's not a good thing.

Rxdriver,
Being said that......is it ok to change oil every 5,000 miles? Or would it be better off to change it every 4,000 miles to be on the safe side.

I would go for an oil filter with synthetic filter material to catch finer particles. Also never change oil at Lexus or any chain, the dino oil they used are bought in bulk quanity, mostly likely recycled oil.
Personally I use Mobil 1 at interval 8-10K, and change filter in between. Of course, as a DIY, I return used oil to Autozone so it can be recycled for other Lexus owners to use

I wouldn't change the oil any sooner than that, because then you're not getting your money's worth out of it. I know that 3,000 miles was the rule for a long time, but the quality of oils has improved over the years, and even dino oil should last for 5,000 in today's cars.
I also change the filter every time the oil is changed.
I know others will disagree... everyone has their own opinion on this subject, and it's really hard to say who's right.

To keep the thread on topic, the man asked for how long oil filter lasts for mobil 1 synthetic, not those same old "syn vs. dino" or "oil change interval" debates. Here is a link that has study on # of miles Mobil 1 is still good w/o changing filter, according to oil test data.
I believe scientific data rather than rule of the thumb.

There is nothing "shocking" about 10,000 mile oil change, that link is pretty laughable since every manufacturer in Europe has 10,000 mile oil change intervals, with some even having 35,000 mile oil intervals (germans - explains why they are at the bottom of ratings).

But your posting you never answer the question "how long does the oil fitler last". Please read the question that shikbas posted. We are here to help the man, not to debate and go OT about how long the change interval is.

Any scientific data shown to support oil filter is not good after 5000 miles? Lexus has incentatives to reduce its warranty liability and to generate service revenues (although not in your case). I trust Lexus, but I also verify.
