The NAV screen will change to "night mode" which is a black background instead of a white background when: (1) the headlights are on AND (2) the dashboard light sensor (way up under the edge of the windshield) senses low light, AND (3) your dashboard light dimmer is not set to FULL ON. Usually the failure to switch to night mode is caused by the dashboard light dimmer being set to its highest position. Dial it down a bit from "full on" and that should solve the problem.
If you don't want to wait for evening to test this, just place something like a notepad or a shop towel over the light sensor and turn on the headlights. The light sensor is under a little plastic dome in the far front left corner of the dashboard way up by the bottom of the windshield.
Also, in the setup menu there are some choices (4) for day and night mode background colors, which you can select, or you can set it to AUTO and it will change them every three months just for the hell of it. For day I like the light blue because it's a little less harsh than the "normal" which is white. You can pick a beige or a green, also. (I forget what the 4th color is, but it's in the book.) The night colors are a little harder to tell apart, so I just set this to "Normal," which is fine, and that's all you asked about anyway.
The NAV in my '02 SC has a night mode (which is triggered the same way), but is one generation older than the NAV in my 04 RX, and does not offer the background color selection, but I have learned to live with that. (Fortunately, they use the same data disc.)
