Default 11 States and 4,300 miles later!

Just finished a road trip with our 05 RX, covering 11 Western States, and 4,338 miles. We hit rain, snow, hail, and sunshine. Went from sea level to 13,000 feet and back. Burned up 186.55 gallons of fuel (mostly premium) and looks like we averaged 23.2 MPG, which ain't all that bad! Our average fuel price for the trip worked out to about $2.75/gallon.

The RX performed flawlessly, and managed to cruise at 90 MPH for a lot of those miles. A lot of the highways we traveled were empty of traffic, dead straight, and in good driving conditions. The Wyoming and Montana highway patrol obviously weren't interested in busting the RX for speeding, having better things to do like chase semi's. The only issue we encountered was a piece of rubber from a shredded semi tire that took out the air splitter (and a portion of the inner fender liner) on the left front.

The whole trip was great and just wanted to share the stats with you all.

Glad that you had a great trip. Yes, it is true that WY and MT patrols don't care about speeding on open highways. When an accident happens (usually a single car accident that followed Darwin's theory,) they simply scrap the carcass off the pavement and mark a white X on the side of the road.

They do catch people going 21 mph in small town 20 mph zones. So be careful when you get in town.

Sounds like a fun trip, thanks for the report on performance and average MPG.

Great news! I don't own an RX, but want to take a similar trip someday.

Cool Road Trip!

What a great trip! That sounds like a lot of fun. We took a long road trip about two weeks after we got our first RX 300 back in '00. That was pretty brave because Lexus wasn't too well represented in the intermountain West in those days. Our little RX was the subject of a lot of curiosity and stares.

We put on 6,800 miles in three weeks, almost six years ago covering 10 states - with about the same fuel consumption you had. ‘Course in 2000, gas was a little cheaper. No problems of any kind, despite a blizzard in Wyoming and a baking 114 deg. in North Texas. We went from sea level on the Texas Gulf Coast to Colorado's Berthoud Pass at 11,307 feet, back to sea level on the Washington/Oregon/California coasts.

Our RX didn't have a Navigation option (none was available in '00), but we used a GPS system on a laptop that proved to be excellent. It allowed us to get off the interstates and visit a lot of two-lane America we probably wouldn't have dared without it. Trip time wasn't much longer, and we gladly exchanged the slightly slower pace and the scenery of the backroads for the boredom of the super slab.

The trip was relaxing, very comfortable, and fun. We also found the RX to be a swift, silent, and comfortable long-distance runner. We look forward to a trip through Appalachia this fall. Post some pictures of your trip! I have several in the Gallery that may look familiar to you

Default Road Trip

Whoops, found an error in the calcs last night. My sweet wife averaged the "indicated MPG" rather than doing the proper division of miles v. gallons. Looks like the actual miles driven was 4,367 for 186.5 gallons so that moves the MPG up a bit to 23.4MPG. Still, it's an impressive average for an impressive vehicle. Now, I wonder what that inner fender liner and air splitter tab are going to cost me...

Will try to post some pictures - just have to figure out how. We have a couple of good shots of the RX on top of Wolf Creek Pass (about 13,800+ feet) communing with nature while the road crews were blasting and clearing rock. And another shot at Craters of the Moon National Monument in Idaho.

Just for info sake, we left Bellingham, WA on Saturday 8 April and returned on Friday April 21st. Last leg was from Pocatello ID to Bellingham, via Craters of the Moon park. 14 hours in the saddle including three gas stops and one meal break. About 867 miles that day. Oregon has some of the most regressive speed limits in the US, we came out of ID where the limit was 75 (and prior to that UT, NV etc where it was 75 too) into max 65 MPH. Of course like all the motorists and truckers around us, we strictly obeyed that posted limit (stated with tongue firmly planted in cheek).
