New SUVs
Hey everyone, today I saw in person for the first time a couple of the newer SUVs that have been recently released.
Acura RDX - This was a big disappointment in terms of exterior styling, very boxy and too fussy in the details. The interior looks very nice but seems a lot smaller than the RX. I was going to wait for this to come out but then I got my RX anyway so I'm glad I wasn't too impressed. I think the new Mitsubishi Outlander which I've only seen in magazines is a lot better looking.
Audi Q7 - Great looking exterior and interior was quite nice too, hides it's size well.
Overall I think the RX styling has held up really well since it's introduction, even compared to these newer models, which is probably why they've never modified it, not even the wheel design.

I dislike the styling of the Audi Q7. The face looks too busy and awkward, with the front grill too tall. The rear looks as boring as the Porsche Cayenne.
The RX is still the best looking SUV in its class. I hope the next redesign for model year 2009 retains the same RX body styling like the drawing in http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do...ticleId=116536

The new RDX is 5.5" shorter than the RX, and, like its big brother and most other SUVs out there, has a pretty boxy look. Also, it only has a 4 cyl engine.
As for: "The RX is still the best looking SUV in its class," I think most people would agree, but still, that's like being the prettiest one on "The View."

I agree the RX is one of the best-looking SUVs, but I think there's a lot of others that are just as good if not maybe slightly better: BMW X5 current model with bigger wheel sizes, Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, VW Touareg with 18" plus alloys. Even the new large GM models (Escalade, Suburban, etc. look great to me).
Also I don't agree all SUVs are ugly in general. I like good designs in all categories equally, sports cars, supercars, sedans, wagons. Sorry tfischer but I have to say I am not a fan of the SC430 at all (exterior that is, I think the interior is brilliant).

I've had an SC430 since the week it first went on sale, and I agree that it's an unusual design. I wish it were as drop dead gorgeous as the SC400, still one of the most beautiful cars on the road. I hated to give that up, but I wanted some new features, but most importantly, I wanted the convertible. The folding hard top is the best feature ever.
I disagree with you about the large SUVs, however. They are all giant ugly boxes.

The RDX does have some kick to it (but granted that is not the only thing that one looks for) as I tested it recently and it does not handle too bad. Would still stick with my RX300 though.

I have just put down a deposit on a 07 RX350 with Performance Package about six weeks ago and then came across the news about the totally redesigned 07 Acura MDX ~ and I'm debating whether I should cancel the RX for the MDX!
It seems the new MDX now has many more advanced features than the RX for about the same price! What gives?!?

The RDX is not in the same class as the RX
The Acura RDX competes more (pretty much directly) with the BMW X3. You are comparing apples with oranges; engine, chasis, size.
The new MDX would compete better with the RX. Since it is newer and is a redesign rather than just a new model year, I would expect it have have more functions (technological or other) than even the '07 RX. There are a handful of functions I would expect from a $40k+ luxury SUV made in 2006/7: Acura's navigation is better than Lexus - with Acuralink for traffic conditions. But I expected the ventilated seats with the '07 RX as a minimum. laser cruise control. (I really expected this in the '05 / '06 models)
Personal wish list of factory options (sorry, maybe this should be a separate thread):
- V8 option
- Bigger wheels
- Push start (Keyless)
- MP3 integration
- Four zone climate control
Just to name a few from the top of my head...
