Hello.
I just got a rock chip in the windshield of my RX400h and was quoted $1,600 to replace it. The local auto-glass place said that I would have to buy the windshield from my dealership, but I was wondering if there was anywhere else that sold it for a more reasonable price.
Thank you.

I'd suggest you do some googling on aftermarket auto glass safety. If you try to save some bucks by using aftermarket glass you may be putting yourself and family at risk as this glass may not as strong as OEM glass. OEM glass is more costly to make and is safer. You will find that often the same companies that make OEM glass also make aftermarket glass. Remember that the windshield serves as the backing plate for your airbags, and provides up to 60% of the strength to keep your roof from collapsing if you roll over. Also important is the proper installation of this glass. Use of the proper adhesives that have not aged past their expiration date, use of the proper cleaning chemicals, properly trained and certified installers, proper installation equipment, etc.
Chips can sometimes be fixed rather than replaced. You might look into this. My insurance company does 100% coverage of windshield glass with no deductible. They will also cover chip repair attempts. Check with your insurance to see if they do this.
If you have rain sensing wipers you may need a more expensive windshield. Be sure to specify which you have when you price it.
Your windshield is not just a piece of glass to keep rain and bugs from hitting you, it is a major part of your cabin safety. Some areas of auto repair are safe to use aftermarket. IMO, glass is not one of them.

The high price is probably related to you having rain-sensing wipers. $1600 is too expensive, but I think there was another thread on this issue about a month ago. I seem to remember someone said their dealer was around $1200.

The search button is your friend. There are at least a couple of extensive posts on this forum that described in detail the various issues you should consider, whether you repair or replace your windshield. Topics include the type of insurance you have, getting it done by the dealer or not, repair or replace, using a windshield replacement specialist, and the different types of windshield replacement glass out there on the market, among other things.
