DVD update
We have a 2004 RX330 bought new in October 2004. It came with DVD version 03.1 installed for the navagation system. We keep getting different answers from our dealer as to what the latest version is for the system. We almost got into a serious wreck in Atlanta this past February when folllowing the system and turned the wrong way on a one way street that had been recently changed. Also, the dealer states the the fee for a updated DVD to be around $300. Does this sound reasonable? Thanks for any information and or advise.

Welcome to Club Lexus!
I'd look into one of our CL vendors for the update as a less expensive alternative.

The latest update is Ver 5, which came out in Jan of 06.
Once a year or so is about the usual release cycle, and prices range from 250 to 300, as I recall.
Sewell usually has an excellent price.
Do not buy these from vendors on eBay as they usually mis-state the part number and the gen number.
Keep searching around here on this forum and you will find info on new Nav Discs. Also look at the SC430 forum, as your system will use the same data disc as a 2002 or 2003 SC430. (I have an 02 SC430 and an 04 RX330, and they use the same data disc -- the 05 RX is a different GEN system and uses a different disc with a whole different format, so be careful when you buy.)

Well, apart from the lying and the stealing and the reprehensible dishonesty, which we can get to later, the answer to your question is yes, you can make up any story you want.
However, service managers have generally not fallen off the turnip truck yesterday on the outskirts of town. NAV systems never fail due to a faulty DVD, because the disc stays in the drive and is never touched, except by a beam of light, and that doesn't count. The service manager will test the NAV system and see that it is working properly, unless the disc is damaged, which would be due to your carelessness, and thus not covered by any warranty.
Even if the disc were the cause of the problem, the remedy is to provide you with the same part that is malfunctioning, not with the current version.
You just bought a $50,000.00 car; if you want the new data, pony up like the rest of us and get the new data disc. If you can't afford the accessories, maybe you are overextended in the transportation department.
Now let's get back to the lying . . . . .

The latest update is Ver 5, which came out in Jan of 06.
Sewell shows the latest version to be 6.1. Is it 5 or 6.1. This has further confused me and my dealer appears to also be confused.

Ver 5.01 came out in early Jan of '06. (There are no version 5 updates beyond .01 -- these discs are strictly one per year at the most.)
Version 6 (probably 6.01) is "announced" and will probably be "released" in January or Feb of '07. It is listed because dealers can take orders for it now.
I ordered the version 5 several months early because Sewell was offering a discount (to club members, I think) if they ordered early. I have not seen such an offer at this time, but you might call. (I'm not getting this update because I have ver 5 -- in my experience, getting a new disc every 2 or 3 years is enough.)
You can order ver 6 from Sewell (or another dealer) but my guess is that delivery will not be made until January or Feb -- but that's only a guess.
If you really want to save some money, you might ask if they have any ver 5s in stock; if so, they should be available at clearance prices. On the other hand, given the low demand, I doubt dealers keep any of these on hand -- I would think they would order it from a distributor as customers ask for it.
The folks at Sewell, like the folks at most Lexus dealerships I have dealt with, are very helpful and informative. For accurate information, I suggest you call Sewell's (or your local dealership's) "parts department" and see what they have to say about version 6.

The above is correct. I thought from the original post that we were talking only about 2004 RX 330s. The 2005 and 06 and of course the 07 350 have different GEN nav systems which use a different disc.
The Gen2 (like my '02 SC) and the Gen3 cars (like my '04 RX) both use the same data disc, even thought the features of the NAV system are a little bit different. Gen 4 and beyond and systems I am not familiar with. All of my comments above refer to Gen 2 and Gen 3 systems.

the 06 upgrade is available at Sewell now (since mid-November). use the link above from Dave's post:

they have been selling them on a group buy in the vendor forum for $269. there is also a rebate if you return your old disc (i think for an 03 disc you get $20). sewell is a fantastic vendor and the prices cannot be beat by any local dealer.
NOTE: keep in mind that the "override" to enter destinations while in motion is eliminated with the newer 06 disc. the 2nd gen IS folks figured out a way to get around it, but it's a little complicated. see here:

i upgraded my disc last year for my Gen 3 nav (early 04 RX) to the newer 05 disc and was happy with the results. i prob won't upgrade again for a few years since there are so many new freeway changes in san diego. you may be able to get an 05 disc on ebay or from sewell for much cheaper if you don't want to spend the full $269.
