In NY they charge you and extra (I am guessing on the amount because I never pay extra to have it pumped but 30 cents seems like a good guess) 30 cents a gallon to pump it for you, but if you are handicapped they are not allowed to charge extra. In New Jersey you have no choice it is full service only. There is a station near my house where there is no charge for full service but I would rather pump it myself because I don't like it when they remove the cap and let it hang from the cord. The cap swings on the cord and hits the side of the car and may dammage the paint

In Long Island NY 90% or more of the stations are open 24 hours the problem I had in 1996 with stations being closed was when I decided to take an out of the way scenic road and ran low late at night. My trip from NY to Texas in Oct of 06 was when the light came on and the next exit was a long distance away. The big problem as I see it is that you can never be sure how far away the next station is. The Nav system (the RX has the nav system but I am also bringing the Garmin GPS that I use in my Jeep, the Lexus GPS is great but the Garmin has some features that the Lexus doesn't have) is great as far as letting you know where the next station is but you can't be sure it will be open late at night. I am very excited about getting my car back. It has been sitting in the garage at my house in Texas collecting dust. I will fly from NY to TX on the 30th to pick it up.

nah, that is just for you "city folk."

Ever look at a state map and notice those big gaps of nothingness? Well, I live in one of those. The type of place where the local market and drug store run you a tab or you hop on the four-wheel to drive down the road to visit the neighbor because they are way..way over there. Even the Google maps are way out of date for this place.

If I drive a bit I can get to civilization and the world of 24 hour gas stations. Though at today's prices, it is not worth it unless I am already out and about.

The exact points I was raising in my question about how much you can get out of the tank. You never want to do it, but you never know when you might need to go that extra mile and it is good to know if it is available to you or not. Stay on the interstates and you can almost always find a 24 hour station. Get on the back roads and it is hit or miss.
