Upgrade 2004 RX Nav DVD??
Hi,
I have a 2004 RX 330 and am wondering if anyone has upgraded their NAV DVD? If so, did you do it though Lexus or aftermarket. I've seen some upgrades on Ebay. Also, what version do you upgrade too?
I also know there are different generations, are these just new versions and I can upgrade to Generation 5, or whatever is the latest?
Any help would be appreciated.

I haven't upgraded my DVD navi disc but I was also looking into it. here's the upgrade you need:
Generation 3, update 6.1 ... the part number should be: pt219-gen23

You cannot upgrade to a new "generation." That refers to the hardware of the NAV system itself, including the display screen. That cannot be changed.
What you get on a new DVD is a new "version" of the data, updated to add new roads and new "points of interest." A new version comes out about every year, but not everybody feels that the slight increment in new data justifies the expense annually. Every 2 or 3 or even 4 years is more like it, depending on how much you use your system, especially out of town.
Be careful about buying these discs on eBay as the sellers are often not clear (or honest) about the description of the disc. The wrong DVD should not harm your system, as the reader just won't load the data if it's not a DVD for your generation of NAV and as long as it's a more recent data version than what you have in there now. Many upgrades also contain some updates to the OS or the BIOS or something like that, and, once installed, render the system unable to read older data discs. There is a notice and a warning screen during installation if this is going to happen.

Ok, I stand corrected. I guess it could be done if you had the time, money, inclination, and if you have a low threshold of psychic satisfaction.
It's just that I don't have that kind of time on my hands.
But if you can get that to work, let us know what was involved.

of course it's possible if you changed EVERYTHING.
i was asking how the hell you know that they changed the display, etc.?
i was assuming that it's the brain that controls the resolution, etc...
r u going to go crazy changing out a DVD player?
should be a 15 minute job.

The most obvious will be the additional POI's and streets on the map. The functionality, appearance and resolution remains the same for the most up to date disk for a particular generation.

Do your home work before jumping into swap for new generation. It can be plug'n Play but then it might not.
For sure the GPS system is different [there are differences in how a position is determined]. Then there is the unknown portion which consists of
wiring harness.
Jacks/plugs.
pickup antenna (very unlikely it changed)
display.
I have not encountered any instructions or even claims of swapping to the new generation.

No, you'd have to do a full swap. The Gen5 nav has a higher resolution LCD screen. There are physically more pixels present than in previous models. Even if the actual screens were the same, I doubt swapping out the data unit would do the trick, as old and new probably aren't compatible.
