Default Roof top carrier questions

Hi there gang. We are planning a trip next month to the Outer Banks and my wife doesn't want to jam everything into the back of the '05 330. So, I thought I would check with you to see who has a roof top carrier that: 1. fits nicely on the existing racks of a 330/350 2. doesn't look like the Beverly Hillbillies are moving in 3. holds a fair amount of overflow and is fairly versatile 4. is sleek and aerodynamic and not noisy at highway speed 5. doesn't cost a fortune.

Opinions?

TIA,
Gary

A consultant who works with me has a carrier on her 04 330 and really likes it. Depending on the size you get (the kind to fit Skis or the big box that fits luggabe) you may feel the wind a bit more than usual and gas millage might be less than usual but that's pretty much the only down side that I can think of.

I bought a Surco Safari Roof Rack for my old RAV4 because I needed the ability to carry larger stuff that would not fit inside.

When I bought my RX330, I just ordered a new set of clamps made for the RX, and now I can attach it to the roof rack rails in about 5 minutes. (On first install, take some time to carefully affix the clamps in the right place; once that is done, it can go on and off very quickly.)

It meets most of your criteria; it's a nice rugged look and does not cost a whole lot. It is not, however, aerodynamic, and I do notice some wind noise, but just about anything you pile on top of the car will do that.

You can see photos of the safari rack here:

Thanks for the responses. I was beginning to think NO ONE had ever put a cargo carrier on their RX.

luvmyride, any chance you can ask your co-worker the brand of cargo carrier and her impressions of it? I am considering a small one in the 8 cubic foot size for overflow. Don't want a monster that holds skis, ice chest, etc.

tfischer, I should have stated cargo carrier, not implied roof rack. I saw the rack you have and I am only interested in a small cargo box for overflow.

I ditched the roof rack the use a trailer hitch rack. It holds more and doesn't incur an aerodynamic penalty.

I put a Thule Spirit box on my car. It looks fine when you put it on, and has very little wind noise or resistance, but your hatch won't open all the way. It'll open maybe 30 degrees? That was an oversight, but I deal with it. :
