Makes sense, there is a shelf life for rubber tires. Now being exposed to UV is a plus. I have a spare for my CRV which is exposed, never been used and I do not intend to use, it has been 6 years, mainly just for emergency.

You should look at it every month or so when you check the tire pressure in the other 4 tires. You should make sure the tire pressure is correct in the spare as well. All tires lose air. Also, changes in temperature affect tire pressure. You do not want to be caught with a flat spare.
