I just picked up my new 2008 Lexus RX350 today and noticed that the outdoor temperature indicator is very slow to respond. It was 84 degrees outside when I left my garage and it was indicating an outdoor temp of 72 degrees. It took almost 30 minutes of driving until it finally climbed to 84 degrees. I have the navigation system, but that should not make any difference. The car I traded and my wife's vehicle both have outdoor temp indicators and they are changing within minutes.
What do other people experience?
Thanks

Don't quote me on this but I think the RX 300 measured the air temp with a probe below the bumper on the driver's side. I know mine was reading pretty high (up to 114 deg. on a blacktop road in N. Texas in late May), particularly on a sunny day. That was probably a good idea, particularly when icing might be a consideration. Reading the road surface temperature - or something close to it could be critical in these cases.
The RX 330 and onward I believe read the temperature of the intake air - thus may be a little slow to respond, particularly when driving at low speed and not pulling in high volumes of outside air. This intake air temperature is what your ECC is working with to map fuel flow and spark advance. Seems like a good idea, but the earlier version might have been better info for the driver.
Just my 2¢ . . .

I haven't noticed mine taking that long to change with that small a variation in temperature, Maybe five minutes or so. Mine consistently reads 3 degrees higher than the outside temperature though. I have a Davis weather station at my house that is very accurate. The RX400h's temp is always 3 degrees higher than the weather station when parked outside my house. I wonder if the dealer is capable of modifying the display. Under most circumstances it doesn't really matter. Except when its the difference between 34 and 31 degrees and the streets are wet and beginning to freeze.

There should be a calibration process....

Today my outdoor temp indicator was working properly. It was 65 in my garage and 54 outside and after I drove about three blocks it was 58 and a couple of more blocks and it reached 54 for a match. I don't know what was wrong with the device the first day I took possession of the vehicle when it seemed the sensor was almost stuck. Can these vehicles repair themselves?
