Question New rims: Tire pressure equipment needs to match?

Hey all,

I am looking at getting some rims off ebay for a 2006 RX400H. I have heard for example you cannot take stock rims off an 04 RX330 and put them on an 07 RX350 due to the fact that the tire air pressure equipment does not match between an 04 and an 07. Does anyone have any information or insight on this topic?

Thanks so much,

Bill

I would assume the same tire pressure is valid for both an 04 and an 07 or an 08. There has been no major re-design between the years....in terms of weight. Perhaps a sports package or a trailer package will spell a different set of tires ( I do not know that for a fact).

Does the 04 have a direct tire pressure monitoring system? Can anyone with a 04 confirm that? Is the valve stem made of metal or plastic? I know that earlier generation of the RX us the indirect tire monitoring system, which just measure each tire's different rotational speed.

The 04 has a sensor tied in. I saw ot while cleaning my fender wheel lining and wheels. It has the low tire pressure monitoring....

If thats the case, then all you need to do is take off the TPMS sensors from the old rims and install it on the new rims. Make sure you find a tire shop that has experience dealing with these sensor because they will break easily. Also, make sure the new rims are design for TPMS sensor.

Ok, maybe I take that back....I did not see any on the wheel, I must have been looking at a different thing. I cleaned all my wheels and there are no attachments...I have an 04. Is TPMS an option?

You cannot see the actual sensor from just cleaning your wheels. The sensor is attach to the valve stem itself and it is inside the tire. If the valve stem is made of metal all the way into the tires, then you have a direct TPMS system.

The '04 has an ABS computer driven rotation sensor, not any direct read. The '06 hybrid has no sensor system of any kind, so it's a matter of getting your '07 direct sensors to fit to the wheel. Hope that helps define the types, but I don't know where the '07 direct read sensor sits in the wheel.

Correct. The 04-06 uses the wheel sensor to monitor rotational difference. The 07+ uses the active TPMS in which the transmitter is part of the valve stem. Two totally different "TPMS" systems.

Default So 04-06 rims are interchangeable, but not with 07 models

Hello again all,

So the bottom line is that factory rims / factory chrome rims are interchangeable between rx330 model years 04-06 and also 06 rx400h models, but not 2007 models due to the “active TPMS in which the transmitter is part of the valve stem”?

Thanks,

Bill

correct...with one caution---the 400h manual indicates the wheel has a higher weight capacity, so wheels for a 330/350 would not necessarily be built for the additional hybrid weight class.
