Be very careful with additives, you want to get the good stuff (PEA). I recommend Gumout Regane Complete Fuel System Cleaner. MSDS showed 30-40% PEA. Go to http://www.pennzoil-quakerstate.com/...l7_msds_fs.htm to check it out.

In case you have not noticed, Gumout is now owned by SOPUS, same company that makes Shell V Power gasoline.

Most gas treatment and fuel injector additives have low % of key carbon deposit removal additives. Quality not quantity in this case.

I guess find out how much a bottle of that stuff is and do the math--a bottle on every other fill-up, or pay for premium fuel on every fill-up.

The premium blend is almost universally 20 cents a gallon more than the 87 octane around here. A typical fill is about 15 gallons so the price differential of premium over regular is $3.00 a tankfull. Fuel injector cleaner runs $3.50 to $5.00.

The Injector Cleaner is recommended every 3~5 thousand miles. Not every fill up. Looks like every 10 fill ups?

Interesting. However, if what "mandyfig" says is correct (use the cleaner every 3,000 to 5,000 miles), then the "87 octane/FI Cleaner" method is more cost efficient as long as that grade of gasoline doesn't noticeably affect performance.

I'd probably use 87 octane as well if it didn't make my car smell like rotten eggs. The Lexus dealer checked the tune and found it to be in spec. They said that I need to burn better gas. When I do the smell goes away. The dealer suggests that continued burning the cheap gas in my car will damage the cat.

Anyone else have this same issue with smell from the cheaper gas?

Well $3.00 a tank is no big deal so I just run premium. I'll likely buy an 09 when they come out so its not a problem.

I can assure you that when I burn 87 the car smells of rotten eggs and when I burn premium it doesn't. I've played around with this for a long time (since November of 04) and that is what occurs, repeatable 100%. I've had my dealer look at this three times and each time he stated the car is properly tuned and to just burn better gas.

So what to you think is causing the smell?
