I'm wondering if one of those roof-rack mounted bike racks would work on an RX? Here's another link.

Getting the bike up on the roof would not be convinient and any accident taking the bike up and down and if not secured properly would be costly to the RX.

It has been a while, but there was a post in RX300, where some on made a bolt down stand in the cabin (rear seats may have been folded down).

You prefer not to do it, but I would suggest reconsider and just have a hitch (without electronics). Then you are open to quite a few options. The down side is that bikes may get dirty if you have to travel through dirt. The other problem would be the accessability to the hatch (unless you are willing to invest in a swing away carrier.) The electronics are necessary if you were to pull a trailer.

It's not that hard to mount bikes on the roof. Simply use the rear tire as a footstep. Lift the bike up and mount it.

I do use a hitch mount rack. It is indeed convenient. The downside is that driving on unpaved road would sometimes get dust into the chain. Switching to Teflon grease seems to help.

To the original poster, I do remember seeing bumper clamp-on bicycle rack available. Check your local bike shops or do a search on eBay.

Smile Bike Rack on my 2007 RX350

I purchase a bike rack that works great on my 2007 RX350. It slides right into the 2" hitch and holds 2 bikes safe & secure. I can't remember the name off hand, something like Sirus. It's very similar to the THULE T2 system, but this one came with the lock-set (both for the hitch & to secure the bikes) and an twist-adjust that tightens the connection (it expands out from the inside of the hitch). I've used it to take my bikes as far as San Diego and up into the mountains and would easily trust it to go across the country. I felt it was a good deal, paid under $500 for everything with tax. It does weight a lot and takes a lot of room in the garage to store when not in use. But I wouldn't trust my bikes to anything else. My number on concern was being safe & secure - nobody wants a good set of bikes to fall off. I'll see if I can put it on tonight and snap some photos - it does look really good when on and loaded.

Hitch without electronics should be around 100 (my best guess). Check uhaul etc. $25-30 for install.

The bike carrier would be another expense.

i got lexus to include a hitch when i bought the car. its a bit ugly, but it makes do. My old hitch on my rx300 was way underneath the bumper so that it was practically hidden. this one sticks out a little. On the invoice, it says that it costs 300 dollars or so. Its a "hidden hitch" brand...made in canada
