Smile Swimming in the Ocean with my Lexus Remote/Key

Though some may get a thrill out of this. I spent Friday at the beach (company in town) and was out in the water enjoying the waves (swimming, not surfing) for about an hour and a half. When I came out of the water I realized I had my keys in my pocket - my Lexus remote was underwater for the entire time - soaking in the Pacifics salt water. I was worried it was ruined, but it worked normal deactivating my alarm and unlocking my doors. When I got home I opened up the remote to see if there was any water inside...and not a single drop. Great design - I've accidently had other remotes go thru the wash and not make it, was amazed to see my Lexus remote take some harsh water for a prolonged time and come thru with no issues. I wouldn't recommend swimming in the ocean with your Lexus remote/key, but it's great to know it can make it thru without any issues.

Not that is comforting to hear that the key FOBs are water resistant...do not try this at home....

I heard they are very expensive to replace, I lost mine in a Cracker Barrel restaurant a spent a lot of time looking for it because another Lexus owner told me they cost about $200 to replace, I don't know if this is correct but the unusual shape of the key cut plus the remote built into the key seems like it would be expensive.

The shell is not expensive, the transponder inside will make you weep...and key has to be cut, $200 at least from ebay. Dealer much more...

Might be wise to purchase an empty shell. One day, your key fob will crack. Might affect the circuit board when left cracked. It should have been designed better. Notice how you put in torque on your key fob when starting the engine?

I believe it is the unusual amount of profit that Lexus wants to make off of us!

When I replaced my key (it was cracked) the Lexus parts guy reminded me not to use the top of the key to turn on the ignition. He said if you hold closer to the ignition the torque will not happen and the key is less likely to crack. Poor design is right.

I try to remember to hold farther down on the key, but old habits die hard.

That's a good tip, but as you said, old habits never die.

You should see the new Acura keys, they are flip keys with a chip inside. $380 for one of those.

In Mexico, we have a Spanish carmaker called SEAT that also offers a very interesting looking flip key. I couldn't find a decent picture of one on the net, but will see if someone at the track (usually at least one) can let me take a photo of one.

Why not go "push button," like everybody else? More and more cars are turning into keyless, more electronic protection than hardware protection.

There are issues with a lot of keyless ignition and remote starters, there is a learning curve I guess.
