Default Nav update disc = updated software???

Just wondering if anyone knows if installing the latest nav disk (I have an '05 with I think Gen 4 navi) updates the nav software, or does it just update the nav maps and POI's?

Thanks.

just the map data and POIs. your functions and overall nav look won't change after getting a new disc.

Sorry to disagree, but the newest update v6.1 does change the software along with the data. Biggest change is loss of ability to override blockout of destination entry while under way.

This has been noted in several model forums, and is a function of the 6.1 update, not the model. Last update to keep the override is the 5.x update.

you are right, i forgot about the override. i went from the 03 to the 05 update and didn't lose the override, however i know the 06 changes that.

but the resolution and buttons don't change in the updates. i think that's what the OP was referring to? (you won't get from Gen 4's crappy resolution to Gen 5's high resolution just by updating discs)

Thanks.

I'm not necessarily looking at going from the low res Gen 4 to high res Gen 5 screen. I was just wondering if there was any updated functionality with the updated disc. In particular, for some reason I was really hoping that they would get the E.T.A. function to work like every other system I've ever tried.

I had read the info regarding the loss of override ability, but thought that this applied to Gen 5 in general and not Gen 4. Sorry. I use the override constantly, so guess this means that the update is out for me.

Thanks again for all of the help!

I have a Gen 4 (well I do for another few hours, my wife is picking up her '08 RX 350 today) and the override works fine with the updated disk.

I believe you are correct that this is a Gen 5 feature (read problem) only.

sd, next time you are in your vehicle, can you please confirm the version of your nav disk?

As I said there will be no next time but I did find this...

I remember at the time the dealer did tell me they would update my navi disk at the 5,000 mile service but it's been a long time since I looked at it. I can't say for certian if it is the 5.1 disk or the 6.x disk.

When did the 6.x disk come out?

I believe November of last year, but its very likely they put in the 5.x version which still works with the override. That's what happened with my LS430 - they upgraded it from what came in the car but used the earlier version.
