Hello everyone,
Has anyone heard of any incidents of unexpected side window glass shattering / breakage while driving?
In particular, I'm referring to the window breaking without any impact (from a rock or whatever).
Any thoughts?

Happened to a Toyota I owned. I think it was that the stress on the window in the frame coupled with the heat caused the glass to crystalize into thousands of small pieces. Toyota replaced the glass under warranty.

When the tempered glass breaks it breaks into bits.
Why is due to stress. Stress can be due to impact, or as jfelbab pointed out, the installation can cause the stress. For a movable window, the only mount point is one side and the probability of stress is less as compared to glass fixed from all sides. ... but still it can happen.
Many years back, we had a shattered glass on right rear side window. First we though it was a break-in. It is (still running) '64 Morris Oxford (BMC) diesel and was (and is) a bear to start in winter months and the consensus was that the thief simply gave up. The only contradiction was that the glass shattered outwards.

Usually the result of thermal expansion, this usually occurs to the back glass that is much thinner than the windshield and unable to move like the side windows - but it can happen. About 25 years ago my boss was driving in to work one morning when his window exploded, showering him with broken glass. He changed lanes very quickly and unexpectedly . . . fortunately he wasn't in heavy traffic. The glass company that replaced it said it was not caused by a rock or any external force, but a poorly tempered piece of glass that was probably defective in manufacture (Ford). Good luck proving that!

Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling 539,500 Corolla and Matrix cars because the bolts in the power window system can become loose and ultimately cause a window to shatter.
