When the yellow light comes on, i have two more gallons right?
well no...
thats what i always believed because for some reason, i thought that with all lexus cars, when the yellow light comes on, it means the reserve tank is being used and that means 2 gallons left.
however, i wanted to see of this was true, to two days ago, i was driving and the yellow light came on (i was on my way to work). I continued my way to work, then when i got off work, i travel maybe another 3 miles to the gas station on highway. So that was probably a total of 5-6 miles under the yellow light.
now, the RX brochure says the fuel tank holds 19.2 gallons
i filled on that day 15.93 gallons. so...i guess i have 4 gallons left?

Best is to fill up anytime between 1/2 and 1/4 tank.
I know the downside is more frequent stops to fill up, carrying more gas around, but you keep your fuel pump cool and injectors clean.
I have done about 18 miles with the light on. I am sure some one else has done more miles, but this is not a record to brag about.

Correct, you don't want to brag about it.
I have gotten it to the point where it sputters when I ran it down the track on a record attempt (weight) (I don't recommend this you like your fuel pump). I have notice that when the light comes on I can get about 25 miles on the highway before I can hear it jerk under acceleration.

i've actually run out of gas once; wasn't too bad, just sputtered and no more acceleration. i didn't do it on purpose. i just was running real low and that day i had 4 people in the car (+luggage) and was driving up a big hill and it just died about 2 blocks from the gas station.
typically w/ lexus, all models give you about 50-60 miles when the light comes on. how you ask? well it takes your avg mpg from your last fillup to determine that. and how do i know that? b/c my husband gets like 15-16 mpg on the GS and the light comes on with at least 3-4 gallons left. whereas the RX we average 19-20 so i usually only have about 2-3 gallons left. (this is the same method it uses to calculate your cruising range after filling up - based on your previous mpg)
that's my experience; i don't know if it's an exact science but it's been that way w/ every lexus i've had since 98. i never purposely tested it, but on average that's what it's turned out to be...

Plenty of gas still left
I discovered the additional gas after wondering why my tank was so small - only holding about 16.5 gallons (I would fill up usually with a range of 20 or less miles on the computer). I confirmed it with Lexus that the tank does hold over 19 gallons and the fuel gage is not an exact representation of the amount of fuel remaining. Now I pretty much fill out on E. I would fill up more often, but with the amount of miles I drive I'd be filling up almost daily. Right now I only do about 2 fill-ups a week.
