On my 2004 RX330 4WD the crusing range meter use to read over 300 miles to a tank, but recently everytime I fill up it only reads about 288. Is there anything wrong with my car? Cold weather, Tune-up??

Got my RX350 the day after Thanksgiving. So far the third full tank of gas i get an average of 15gpm. Not good, but i only drive 12 miles to work and back in bumper to bumper traffic. I live in LA afterall!

Sorry, forgot, get about 250 miles before the empty light comes on.

ADD: The 2008 RX350 has a sticker on the gas door/latch, it says Premium Gas only.

Does the MPG depend on the grade of gas being used? We've been using regular 87 octane for our 05 AWD, and getting about 17-18mpg during some spirited driving. On hwy, at about 70MPH get 20-21mpg. On a recent trip to Canada (1000 mile round trip) squeezed out 26.5 mpg but that was doing 50mph on a level stretch of hwy, light load. I'd start filling it up with premium if it gave me more 50 more miles per tank....doubt it will.

We have noted an appreciable difference in both performance and mileage by switching to premium grade on longer trips. As noted previously, a couple of years ago, in mid spring, we took our RX on a 4,600 mile trip that included all the Western states (WA, ID, MT, WY, CO, NM, AZ, CA, NV, UT, OR and back to WA). That trip was done at a variety of altitudes, most of which were well over 3,000 feet. Our average mileage computed to about 23.6 using premium grade only. Considering that we were running a lot of the highways at 80+ MPH (OK I have a heavy foot), at times with severe headwinds (out of AZ to Palm Desert CA couldn’t get above 70 due to winds), it was impressive performance by the RX. Your mileage may vary, but from our experience, we are believers. Note that with winter grade fuel formulations, and cold temperatures, I doubt that we’d achieve that kind of mileage now, were we to try to duplicate the drive – assuming we even could with the snows and winds in the high country.

It's close a year since I got my RX350 and have been consistently getting 23.2 mpg (87 octane) /24.7 mpg (89 or 91 octane) 70%highway 30% surface roads

If it is 100% highway 65 to 70 mph on long trips I saw 26.7 mpg (87 octane) and 27.8 mpg (89 or 91 octane). One time the trip information menu showed 29.4 mpg !!

This is in Texas mix of plain roads and hill country near Austi/San Antonio areas

is your RX AWD or FWD? There must be 2-3mpg difference. I couldn't come close to your mpg in our 05 AWD.

Just run some more detailed math, it would make sense for me to fill up with premium if could achieve 2.0 more mpg per tank.

I have a 2004 330 2WD. I do mostly "city" driving and get about 24mpg.
I always use 93 octane. I tried 87 for a while and did the math. The extra 3 mpg from premium more than paid for the difference between regular and premium.
I do drive very gently, with intention. It's a game for me that pays off at the pump. If I don't, my mpg drops to about 22mpg. If one were an aggressive accelerator and did not look ahead at traffic signals to coast, I could see 18 mpg.
I also found that keeping below 70 mph on the highway made a big difference.

Here is a picture on my recent trip which included driving uphill to an elevation 5000 ft in central Oregon and driving downhill and on plain roads on an 07 RX350 FWD using 89 Grade fuel. Part of the trip was through snow in the high passes. I saw lot of vehicles that skidded off the highway and was scary for me because of the FWD, but the vehicle performed extremely well.

The trip meter was still showing 28.1 mpg after driving mostly on surface roads in the city today.

Wow that mileage is similar to an economy sedan. The best I could get was approximately 28mpg in the plains of Texas

I think also,if you live in a warm climate (such as FL) you will definitely benefit from higher octane, heavier air mass humidity etc.As we all know the cool dense air is what engines prefer, makes the best horse power etc.And doesnt need the higher octane to do it with that type of air mass.

We have had 3 RXs with AWD. 99, 04, 09. Each delivered about the same mileage at about 18 city and 23 hwy. The 09 seems to be slightly better with 18 city and 25 hwy. This actual gas fill up since the on board computer will error about an extra +1 mpg.

Our driving is mostly very casual city driving.

FYI, Each of our RX modes have been extremely dependable with superb service from Lexus.

tjain ... have you modified your car in anyway? Although mine is a AWD, I don't think that makes up the difference. did you check your gas receipts to see that its right? (mileage driven/gallons of gas). I drive in upstate NY in the winter and noticed any time the car does lots of thinking (aka AWD), I get around 15 - 18 MPG...

On my 2005 RX330 AWD I was getting around 18 city and 22 highway. On the 2008 RX350 AWD I still get around 19 city but average around 24/25 on the highway. I can not complain...
