I have 2005 RX330 30K miles with a leaky shock. Are the shocks cover by the 4yr/50K standard warranty? The reason I ask is if the shocks are not cover under 4/50 warranty I can buy the shock to DIY and save on labor. Thanks in advance.

Shocks usually are replaced in pairs. Make sure that they will replace both at the same time (either both front shocks, or both rear shocks, depending on which one is gone).

I just spoke with a Lexus Service Adviser and he said Lexus will only replace the faulty shock and not both rear shocks unless of course I am willing to pay for the other shock replacement.

Yeah unfortunately they will only replace a part that failed pre-maturely. It does not cover items in pairs unless both paired items failed at the same time.

Your car is only 2 years, I would just replace the broken one if I were you.

talk to someone else then. one of my front shocks was leaking, they said they would do both since they usually do it in pairs. my outside mechanic who also owns a rx330 says that since the crappy stock shocks are so soft that they are all bound to leak or have problems with travel. mine already bottom out, but im sick of going to the dealer to have the replacement shocks replaced again.

My appointment is this Saturday. I'll talk to the adviser face to face and see what happens. Thanks for the heads up. I am too firmiliar with crappy OE shocks as I have an E39 6 speed 540I BMW where all 4 shocks went bad at 25K miles which were replaced under warranty then fail again at 55K miles. This time around I replaced all 4 shocks with Koni Adjustable and have been very happy. If I were to replace the RX shocks I would definitely go with aftermarket.

I think you can replace just the one defective shock without ill effect. The dealer would not replace just the one if it would compromise your safety or performance in any significant way. I think the replacement in pairs applies more to when the shocks are worn out and no longer providing adequate damping, as opposed to a catastrophic failure like a leak. I believe the manufacturer standard is that it has to be leaking to be considered defective, as I recall.

here's something you might want to try, if the advisor says no, talk to a tech or talk to a tech first before talking to the advisor. usually the techs will be willing to fix things, but i have noticed that many times its the advisor that is holding back on doing certain work. if the tech says it is necessary the advisor should go with it. if all else fails complain the to the manager or go to another dealer. i used the tech route to get the dealer to change both of my shocks at the same time.
