Test drove '08 RX350 yesterday - offered me $2,400 off MSRP - need your advice
Hi - I finally went in yesterday and test drove an 08 RX350 AWD with Luxury Value Edition (Premium Plus Package)- Navigation, back up camera, lig. graphite wheels for a sticker price of $45,881 which includes a $765 destination charge. They only wanted to come of that sticker price $2,400. I think they can do better than this since the '09 is coming out next month - I was told there would be NO changes to the '09 model at all except an ugly new color choice. I would love to know if you think this is, in fact a good deal. Here are more about the options:
Base Model $38,800
Lig. Graphite wheels $605
Heated seats/rain sen. wipers $665
Generation 5 Nav. with bluetooth $2,650
Luxury Value Edition $2,060
Towing Prep (don't need) $160
Cargo mats $95
Wheel locks $81
Dest. charge $765
Grand Total $45,881
I am hesitant and wonder if I should wait a few more weeks for the '09 Model.

Dealerships normally have about $4,000 above invoice. Most of them will sell you a car for around $600 above invoice, so it will be $3,600 off MSRP. However, here is the cath. When they are not forced to move vehicles of the lot/dealership (like their December-to-remember event that ended on 1/2/08), they will be more likely not to sell you for that price.
My friend works for Lexus and he said that when their big sales event is going on, the major thing for them is to sell as many vehicles as possible not necesserely for as much as possible. Reason being is that Lexus rewards them with some incentives for the amount of vehicles sold.
Anyway - It is up to you. I would suggest wait till new models do actually appear on the lot. Since at that point they will be forced to get rid of 08 models in order to bring in 09 models, it will be in their best interest to just sell you car for $600 invoce than to keep it on a lot doing nothing, costing money, etc.
Your choice. But if you really want it, go for it now. $1,200 is not that huge of a deal for the car you getting.
Good luck

Price will vary from market to market, but…
Tell your dealer to sharpen up the pencil. I purchased 08 just like you described for under $41K at the beginning of December 2007. They also added rubber floor mats.

Looks like thats about $2000 above invoice, thats way too high for a 08 GX. We just purchase a 08 GX 10 months ago at invoice, so it is possible if you look around. The best thing to do is to go thru the internet manager and try to tell him what option you want and the price you want to pay. Be perpare to contact all the internet managers in your area. Try to buy it at the end of the month, better yet end of the quarter, 3/31/08, or the end of the year if you can.

Better Deal ?
Just spoke to another dealer about an hour away and over the phone that said for the same car they would go with $41K plus tax and fees. That's $4,705 off the MSRP. Sounds better doesn't it?

I bought A Bamboo Pearl RX350 with the same options Nov 2007 for $41K in MA. HOWEVER, the dealer closest to my house would not budge from $43.5K even when I told him I had an offer from another MA dealer. So I bought the cheaper one. The best part is that the dealer agreed to pickup/dropoff my car whenever I need service so the fact that it's 30 extra miles away is no problem at all. That's service!

I paid 42K + T&L right after Christmas. Dealer would not come down any more, told me if I had been in in Nov they would have come down a little more however they only had about 55 cars on the lot when I was there and over 220 in Nov. so they were not hurting to sell this car. Sticker was $45,887. I was ok with the deal as it was the exact car that I had built on line and was going to order.

Good News
The local dealer I was working with first has agreed to match the $41K price plus fees! I do feel bad not buying from the first dealer that offered me the best price - but I guess this is how it is supposed to work. It is interesting how one phone call to another dealer made all the difference. Thanks everyone. Hopefully soon I will be posting that I have my new car.

I think you can do a bit better from $41K because you've said it earlier in your post: the 2009 will be the last model and all-new ones will come out as 2010 model. Wait until the last week of January when the sales person is desperate to meet his sales number. I bet you can get invoice + free lexus all-season mats.
Even at invoice, the dealership is still making money from holdbacks and quantity discounts from Lexus. No need to feel 'bad' giving your money to the lowest bidder in this case.
I know auto deals depend on market. But giving you a perspective: $1000 *below* invoice for such RX350 is not unheard of in the state of CA. That's $1K that dealer still have as potential profit from the invoice price.
Good luck.

What about the $765 destination fee?
Just curious - how many people pay this or how many refuse to pay it. I've heard it's just a dealers way to get more money and isn't really necessary. Although I have never been successful at getting a dealer to take it off.
