Default XM and Ipod Question

Quick Question,

The dealer said they could install the XM modulator etc for me at a cost of $300. But I was wondering what there was for the ipod in addition to this. Can I have both on a new 2008 rx that was just built with the newer navigation system

I use a $30 Kensington FM modulator which gets power from the cig plug, plugs into the iPod, and broadcasts at 107.3 +/- on FM. Sounds fine for VOICE (books on tape, podcasts) which is what I listen to.
I've also heard of people sending XM signals thru an FM modulator, but you sacrifice sound quality. Cassette adapters are more direct, but will wear out your cassette mechanism over time.

You can use both the factory XM tuner (buy the kit for the Solara from one of CL's sponsors) and a VAIStech SL2I to run XM and an iPod simultaneously. I think the tuner runs $300-350 or so, the SL2i costs $225 if you don't get it on a group buy.

Go with Vaistech - you will get great sound quality and it works with the steering and nav controls.

Thanks, I am having the dealer install the stuff so the XM works (they are discounting this to $300). Then I will check into the vaistech products to see where to go next for the ipod

It's a little hard to tell what the dealer product is but if it's Lexus sanctioned probably is fine. The Vais module that others have posted about offers the same features described in your dealer link and has been battle tested by many on the forum so it's a good way to go.

Using an FM modulator is a workable solution if you aren't too picky about the sound. It's just not the same. Up to you to decide if that matters. and if you set a modulator at a frequency that works great near home and then travel very far you can run into interferance and need to fiddle with the frequency. Not end of world but installed units are definitely better quality and more convenient imo.
