you probably need a push start type starter to begin with to use that button. it does look cool though. but, again wishful thinking since some people seem to think that its ok that lexus hasnt added a push start system to the RX, even though every other car in its lineup already has it or some form of it.

I have the push button ignition on my new BMW and, other than "cool" factor, I can take it or leave it. I doubt that there is any engineering benefit to it and I would venture a guess that it is more complicated than a standard ignition lock/switch.

probably not too complicated. All you would need to do is run wires to create a short and pull the 'start' wire high. This of course would require a key in the ignition and with the key in the 'on' position, you press the button to start the cranking.
Cool, but not practical. This of course would not be as convenient because if you already have the key in the ignition, you might as well turn it one click over to start up the engine instead of pressing the button.
The reason you need the key there is because your key has an RF tag with a specific frequency that needs to be near the ignition in order to start.

Push button start mentality is still debatable....nice to try...but once you got it, you got it. Wish 2 options given....trad key and a push button.....like the AWD drive button? ON-OFF.

HAHa...I love the red TRD starter. IMO it looks cool. I asked a similar question a few months ago.

One of my cars has a push, one doesn't...my next, will have it also.
Can't stand juggling my keys in and out of my pockets, for what reason?

BMW makes two types of key fobs, btw. One you can leave in your pocket and is truly a remote; the other fits in a receptacle. In addition, where do you carry your house key? My key chain is actually bigger with the remote start fob attached than if I had an actual key.

I have the push button start on my other, no big deal in my opinion. I can take it or leave. Its so much more sensors in the car now and it has its own ECU, more stuff that can fail if you ask me.

Got that right. Replacing mechanical actuation is tricky. Doable but take time to establish reliability studies.

Works very well on our IS and it's nice to be able to just approach the car and climb in wihout fumbling for keys/buttons. Also our "puddle lights" on the outside mirrors go on when we're close to our IS, which is a nice aide when it's dark out. In general, I like the keyless system, and Lexus seems to have gotten it right. I for one look forward to having this system on the next RX. Just hope that there will be some way to have the fob handle more than one car.
