Is there a way to visually check or measure to determine if the brake pads on my 2004 RX330 need replacing? The dealer wants $25.00 per tire to check. At what thickness should the pads be replaced? The dealer says 4mm.

Are you a DIY person? Because there are write ups here showing how you can check them. 4 mm is easy to check. For a $100 bucks? If you were my neighbor, I will do it for half the price! Ok, for free! As long as you jack the car up.

Jack up the front of the car, pull the tire and check the pad visually. I don't let it go below 1/4" to 1/8", or if I get the audible warning, then I replace them. I always check the pads when I rotate the tires every 5000 miles.
