The batteries we deal with are predominantly Gel-cell technology and the "acid" is recycled through certified agencies. There are some really strict laws governing battery (and the associated acid) disposal, both Federal and State. If you run afoul of them, it's not pretty and gets very expensive! In the EU the laws are even stricter in regards to disposal and the battery manufacturers are required, by law, to recycle one-for-one or face stiff fines.

The new lithium ion battery in future hybrids will be a lot more environmentally friendly.

Acids are not a problem as they can be extracted and reused/netralized ... the big culprit is the inert lead. Cleaning washing must be filtered to prevent water contamination.

I'm pretty sure that the Toyota hybrids use are Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries, not lead acid. But just the same, the Nickel can be recycled.

Now you mentioned it, I did a bit of research. From Lexus.com: the RX400h is 1" longer and 2.4" taller than RX350. I have known about the taller part for a little while, but the fact that it is slightly longer as well is new for me.
