Default Spare tire is blown

I just check my Acura TL spare tire and was shock to see the tire was blown big time. I don't know how or when it happened. It was sitting in the trunk forever until now. It is a Firestone donut type and I kept it below the recommended pressure of 60 PSI.

Have you seen or heard of anything like this before?

Had a tire do that when I had a K5 Chevy Blazer with a Spare tire/twin gas can carrier on the back. The tire was old and did the same thing yours did.

At least you found it while in your garage instead of on the side of I-10

Well, as suggested, wrong forum.

However, to answer your question - I had an old tire on a Mercedes that I was driving and it shed the tread in a loud and obnoxious manner. Never saw one do that, sitting in the well.

Chill out, Salim. I know I am in the wrong forum, but I am pretty sure I am in the right Internet - Think about it!

I value Lexus owner's opinions and experiences. Getting here, you must be driven lots of other cars and seen lots of stuff before. That what I am relying on, and got some very good answers by doing that. If you can give me your wisdom, I'd appreciate that. If not, just ignore my post.

Not sure of the exact pressure but those little tiny spares do have a high pressure.

wow.. the pressure for donuts is really high because of the size and the load it must carry to make up to a full size. Did the weather change much in your area? Maybe heat just built up inside the tire and just blew it.

Those mini-spares are built to a price. Because they are not intended to go more than a few miles, they are really miserable excuses for tires. After about 10 years and 12,000 miles on a set of OEM tires, my step-mother's Ciera blew two tires within 2 miles. I put on the previously unused mini-spare, which blew after only a few minutes on the ground. All tires were barely worn and were always maintained at the proper pressure, it was just a factor of age that rotted the carcasses out and caused them to fail. Mini-spares are particularly susceptible to this after only a few years - I don't trust them.

I called Firestone. It would cost me $230.00 for a new tire & rim (they go together, wouldn't sell tires alone). I got one on ebay (with rim) for $55.00. It is interesting to see how long this one will last.

Depending on condition, you might be able to find these minis for as little as $18. I got one for the Ciera at that price at a used tire shop (with rim), had them put it on, and drove it to a good tire shop to buy a new set of tires. That $18 spare wasn't worth much, and obviously had been on the ground for a while before, but it got me where I needed to go. Traded the car a couple of months later when the tranny started to go. Drove it on the Honda lot with only third gear still working. Near perfect visual condition and low miles got me a good deal - the car was rapidly turning into junk.
