Cost of front brake job, turned rotors only?
#3
Not to hijack the thread, but do you want or need to turn the rotors? There have been discussions on this board in the past on the necessity. There are some that say that rotors should be turned on every pad change and those (me included) that say to turn the rotors only when they let you know that they need it.

I have not had the dealer (or any other shop) work on my brakes. I estimate the time to be 2hrs of mechanics time + machinist charge. [~~$250.00] .. we are talking only fronts right!

There may be additional charge for diagnosis time, pads, bleeding (although not required), anti-chatter grease, clips, brake-fluid. The extras add up + tax on top.

Most dealers don't even bother turning them anymore - at the amount they charge for labor, it is about the same price just to put on new rotors! Good quality OEM rotors are in the $50-$60 range - by the time they turn them they will charge you at least an hour of labor for $100 and then you have rotors that will wear out much quicker due to the reduced thickness, it's worth a few bucks more in my book just to have them replaced!

If you're getting surging or shuddering on braking, or only the pads have been replaced twice previously, then your rotors should be replaced. Otherwise, they're probably fine.
To do the job yourself (which is really easy and I highly recommend doing if you're the slightest bit mechanically competent) would run $60 for the pads, and another $120-150 if the rotors need to be replaced (they're priced individually, but NEVER replace just one). Let's call it $200 out the door. For an independent shop, I'd guess you'd be in the $300-350 range for parts and labor. Probably more like $5-600 from a dealer.
