I bought a Lexus RX330 because I know very little about cars or how to fix anything. So far so good (4 years, 18K miles, most in town). Now my original Goodyear 18" tires are wearing out. I don't think I want more like them but don't know what to get. Can anyone help me decide?

I chose to replace my Goodyears with Bridgestone Dueler Alenza in the exact same size 235/55/18. This resulted in a quieter tire that handled much, much better than the OEM tire. It also resulted in a tire with significantly greater thread life.
Of interest is the fact that while the Alenza is the same size as the Goodyear, it has a 1.2 inch wider tread contact patch. This accounts for the better cornering and overall improved handling. Another factor of importance is the thread depth. The Alenzas have a 12/32 inch tread depth while the Goodyears only have 10/32 depth. In other words the Alenzas have a lot more rubber on the tire.
I've commented on these tires before in this thread. IMHO, this should have been the OEM tire for the RX.

go onto www.tirerack.com or www.discountdirecttires.com, select your vehicle and chose any tire available for your RX. Just go with exact same size as your current tires, and you will be alright. Folks on here start experimenting with their vehicles then complain they get lower MPG

Your calculations are correct. I assumed from his comment that the mileage got "crappier than ever" that the mileage was poor before the tire change. Getting 21 mpg average on an RX330 would seem pretty good to me if that included much city driving.
The new tires probably have a bit more rolling resistance than the originals, but that is probably a second order effect.

This thread was one of the more interesting discussions to come along in awhile. Thanks!!
