It's been 3 years since I last updated the DVD, and I recall finding lots of new roads had been updated, both in my area and in others. Even the dealers will tell you that getting a new disc every year is not particularly a worthwhile investment, but if you upgrade every 3 or 4 years I'm sure you will see updates in both map and POI information.
Mine is scheduled to arrive Wed, and my guess is that I will consider the $250 to have been well spent, and that it will be several more years before I upgrade again.

Unknown probably this early on. I can tell you that Lexus tightened the screws on the hybrid trick with 7.1. For gen 4, they managed to defeat it so it couldn't be done, at least by conventional data disc burning methods, by changing the file structure and indexing for v 7.
Several say they were still able to do 5.1/7.1 with Gen5 which is what you have in an 08. I easily burned a 6.1 hybrid so pretty certain that my burner, blank media and software were lexus 'compatible' but I was never able to get a 5/7 combo to work in our gen5 car. Others say they did. So would say buyer beware if you do so expecting to get a hybrid to work, at least until some brave souls try it and report in.
For v7, I ended up getting the Lockpick for $99 which allows unlock of the nav using the factory dvd.

Count me as one that has been able to get both a hybrid 5/6.1 and 5/7.1 to work in my Gen5 07 RX350 using the exact same process and media, allowing the standard override functionality.
It would seem likely that a 5/8.1 hybrid would work assuming that a major change to the Nav disc structure (to take away the override) might muck things up on a stock Gen5 - I have no idea really and won't get 8.1 for a while....but honestly I would be surprised if it didn't keep working.

sorry guys. this is what i looked at previously. copied it from a prior thread and somehow fumbled it. odd thing is, once i use this link, if i go back and try the one i posted above it works too. close browser and retry, the one above only works after i've clicked on this one first. I don't know.

you can't create a gen 4 hybrid with 7 nor was there a hidden menu with override so i doubt it will be possible with 8. still too early to be sure, but low probability i think. dvd 6 didn't have the override but a hybrid was possible. not with 7. they seem to tighten the screws each time. we went with the Lockpick after trying with several members to crack the code.

I think it's probably worth a call to them. their application guide isn't all that clear. you need to know the year/model/gen of your car plus the dvd version you intend to use. 8 is just now out. they should be able to tell you.
for gen4 you can upgrade two levels to dvd 6 and burn a homemade hybrid which will keep the secret override you have in dvd4. as long as you own both versions, it's legit and well documented. and you can probably score a gen4 dvd 6 pretty cheaply since 8 is out now. you can not create a gen4 hybrid between 4 and 7. least i couldn't get it to work.

The Lockpick works fine in my 2007 with the 8.1 DVD. The new firmware doesn't require a button press on the initial lawyerbane screen; that doesn't confuse my Lockpick. I was able to select the destination function while moving just fine.
