Default Engine Question

Does anyone know if there is there a Toyota with the same engine as the Lexus 3.5 Liter 270HP V6 as found in the 2007 RX350?

Oh yeah ... if you know, please tell me.

Believe the 3.5L in the RAV4 and Highlander are basically the same with slightly different tuning and engine mapping.

I believe Avalon(2005-up) and Camry V6 (2007-up) has the same 3.5L too.

Add the 2009 Toyota Venza to that list as well.

BTW, this is not abnormal. Take a look over at Nissan/Infiniti. Their 3.5/3.7L engines are all derivatives of the same design.

Thanks for the responses.

I should have indicated why I wanted to know.

The engine of my 2007 RX350 (7700 miles) makes a slight tapping sound. I'd hate to drive over 300 miles to my dealer just to find out that "it's normal" when there are two Toyota dealers just minutes from my house who may be familiar with the sound and have had Toyota customers ask the same question.

While there are several Toyota models that use the same basic engine, I don't think your Toyota dealer will perform any warranty work on your Lexus. They may be able to diagnose the issue but I bet they will send you the 300 miles to your Lexus dealer for repair.

Thanks jfelbab (man, that's hard to pronounce),

>I don't think your Toyota dealer will perform any warranty work on your Lexus.<
I'm well aware of that and am certainly willing to drive the 300 miles to have any warranty work done. I just want to find out if I need to.

1NICESC430, I have the same issue but mine is 07 with 35k miles. I took it to the local lexus dealer 2 weeks ago and have the same answer "It's normal for the new 3.5L"....The engine will have the tapping sound similar to the disel engine when it first started, but when warm up it's quiet down a lot on mine. If you find the solution, please let us know. Thanks.

Thanks, LEP ...

I'll have to give a listen when the car's warmed up. Good to know it might not be a problem.

My '08 RX350 does the same thing and I tend to believe it is due to the timing chain noise in the engine. YMMV.

If the noise is there on the first start and then goes away, it is typically due to lifters.

I would contact Lexus and they "should" let Toyota handle the warranty work as 300 miles is bit too far.

All those Lexus and Toyota have a slight tapping noise, louder when cold. Lexus will not and cannot do anything about it, so you can pretty much forget about Toyota.
