can snowboards be mounted on factory cross bars without snowboard rack?

can snowboards be mounted on the factory cross bars without a snowboard rack?
has anyone tried this? maybe tie it down with cables through the bindings?

I guess it could work, but it does not seem safe. The cross racks are designed to have a attachment for what you trying to carrier be attached to.

I really wouldn't recommend that.
Snowboards are smooth on the bottom AND top, as are the cross-bars.
There's no telling how the snowboards will react to changing aerodynamics. You may see your board(s) mount themselves in the windshield of a car behind you. I personally used a cargo box until I removed my cross-bars. These were pre-TSB and my warranty expired before I knew of this TSB. I took them out, but the locking mechanism broke on BOTH so I can't put them back in. Still, I love that box. No worries about rain, road debris, etc.
