Absolutely agree with G Man, it's not the actual cold, it's the sudden change in temp, i.e. 0F outside, jump in car, turn heater up, warm air blows onto glass, due to unusual built in stress, glass can and will spontaneously shatter. And it’s not only temp that will cause this to happen when stresses are built into glass, almost anything can trigger it. Fortunately for all of us, this is a fairly rare occurrence since there are many safeguards built into auto glass production now days.

I had this spontaneous breakage happen in an old Ford Bronco many, many years ago. It was the dead of winter, pulled into motel in Montana (Billings as I recall), temp outside in the impressive negative numbers. Next morning got up, started the Bronco, went in to grab bags and get some coffee while the engine was warming up, came out, got in, turned defrost on, and bang, whole windshield crazed. It was sudden, almost explosive. Then had to try to find a auto glass shop to put in a new windshield.
