Default Installing new navigation disk

I currently have NAV 6.1 in my 2008 RX350. I am considering going to the new NAV 8.1. Is anything more complicated to this than just inserting the new disk? Has anyone else made this particular upgrade and do you find it worth it?

It is very easy.

I am still running 7.1, so I can't comment on 8.1.

8.1 will give you the advantage of updated maps and POIs but you will lose the ability to override the system so you can enter a destination while underway.

Installation is as easy as it gets. Page 5 of the reference above shows you where the DVD player is. No tools are needed. Simply lift the cover above the tools and you will see the platic cover over the DVD player on the right. remove the cover, slide the release button over and the installed DVD will be ejected. Insert the new DVD, Slide the release button back, reinstall the plastic cover, close the lid, and your done.

The system will always load a DVD that is a later version than the one previously installed. If you want to go back to your old DVD, pull the 15 A "Radio 1" fuse in the engine compartment to make it forget the last version installed. Leave the fuse out for a few minutes.

When buying a new version, will it come with handbook such as the one I got when I purchased my RX? and any suggestion as to where to get a good price on one?

I doubt highly the new DVD will come with anything but a paper jacket. Lexus appears to consider the DVD as something their service department should install. As far as price, other posts in this and other forums seem to put it at $250 to $300 depending on where you get it. Your dealer's parts department will probably be most expensive. You should also look at Sewell Lexus on line sales and lexuspartsonline.com. Lexuspartsonline.com seems to have slightly better prices than Sewell Lexus but this conclusion only comes from comparing a single item. I do not know about ebay but I cannot see how anyone can sell a legal DVD below the Lexus wholesale price as there is nowhere else one can buy a legal DVD (I think).

Like anything else, the latest version is the most expensive and it gets cheaper with time. 8.1 is going to run about $250 at the dealer. If you see it one bay be sure you are getting a factory original, not a copy. If you decide to upgrade to 7.1 which is now a year old, you can find them ebay and they should be legit. The dealer will be sure to give you the right one for your car. If you buy from ebay, be sure to get 7.1 (or whatever version you buy) for gen5 hardware which is what is in your 08.

fyi, For $99 you can buy the Ultimate Lockpick Basic from Coastaltech which will allow you to use the nav while in motion.

The page does not work anymore.
Here is one from Sewellparts' site.
