I've done that and can never quite move myself to drive the car until I locate it. If it just falls off on the road it's not bad - unless it hits the car behind you - but until I know where it is I worry about it bouncing into the rotating fan while I'm driving. If you've already tried your hand, your flashlight, getting under the car, and a magnet you might still try compressed air or even water pressure.

On the other hand I once left a tire iron loosely on top of a engine and didn't notice it for over a thousand miles. Some times you are just lucky.

Good Luck.

Wow,, where in the world did you drop the socket that not even a retractable magnet tool wont hook it? As Dave Mac suggested, compressed air might be the next best bet to at least dislodge it from where it is so the magnet tool can grab it. Also make sure that your magnet tool is strong too. I have had weak magnets that wouldnt hold a socket even if I put it there by hand, others I have had will not let the item go without some force.

So, did you find it? Where was it?

Been there, more then once over the years. Found some later, never found some too. Yoo bad you can't turn it upside down & shake it.

Was it towards the front or back? Be careful if in the front area because of the fan.

At least you did not have a carburetor - think about dropping a socket or screw or nut down the bore of a carb. In a world of hurt until you take the manifold off and find it.
