Default WHAT IS THIS!! Under Oil fill cap

When I take off the oil filler cap is that part of the engine, one of the lifters I am seeing?
My oil is clean and the fill cap is too.

when I put my finger on the iron cast piece that you can see part of, I had particles come off on my finger from it???

What could this be?
Reason for alarm?

probably just build up from the engine oil when is foams a little.

nothing to worry about.

when you get your oil change done at a shop they typically use "bulk" oil. it meets all the standards, but thats about it. comes in a tanker truck and they store it in a drum somewhere in the shop.

you could purchase your own oil and when you get the oil changed just leave it on the pass. seat and tell them to use it instead.

It's an oil baffle. I have no idea why Toyota gives it the texture and appearance of engine sludge. Don't panic.

Default Oil Baffle

They said same. For sound deadening. The only problem is if you touch it or bump it while filling oil it comes off and is a gritty material.
WHat do you think?

I wouldn't worry about it. Any grit should be picked up by the oil filter pretty quick. My wife's 96 ES300 had the same thing and we never had any issues in the 120,000 miles it had on it. If they were doing this back then and it caused any problems, I think Toyota would have redesigned it.

Mine had it to with 60K on it... I have asked the service dept to clean or replace the oil baffle - we will see what they say.

Do you have a 330 or a 350?

If it's what I think it is it's not for sound deadening, it's so that if you're an idiot and forget to put your filler cap back on, you don't splash hot engine oil all over the engine bay.
