What does it say on the manual? There would be a TSB if Lexus would change the oil rating, I would think.

Then they should use 5W30. Why 5W20? Maybe time to research...BITOG.

I didn't find the Lexus TSIB but I did find this which should shed some light on the correct viscosity to be used with Toyota engines.

http://www.chrysanindustries.com/pdf..._tsb071002.pdf

If someone finds the actual Lexus TSIB post it please but this states that this applies to all toyota engines listed. Note that this viscosity change specifies the MZ series (RX330 engine is a 3MZFE last I checked) as appropriate to use 5w20 as well the GR series (RX350 engine is a 2GRFE I believe).

So it looks like either oil 5w30 or 5w20 would be ok. As long as the oil is a ILSAC GF–4, 5w20 should be fine. FWIW, I understand that the GF4 oil classification is supposed to increase fuel mileage by 0.5%-1.0% over the GF3 spec. So 1% of say 20 mpg = 0.2 mpg better. I'm not thinking it is noteworthy. I'd be more interested in how the long term wear results would compare. Clearly, Toyota feels confident that the engine will last as they will warrant the use of the lighter oil.

I did notice that some extended range oils, even synthetics, do not meet the GF4 spec so look over your oil purchases carefully.

The TSB is in the link I posted above. It's #17 on the list of TSBs I have posted at lexusownersclub. Nevertheless, I think I can change the pdf into a jpg, which I will attach below (hopefully it works). It is for all 2006 Lexus vehicles and was issued in March 2006. I think it would be safe to assume that the 5w20 recommendation would apply to all vehicle going forward from that year.

Just curious, what brand of 5W20 or 0W20 oil are people using?

Damn! I was all excited about the fact that my wife's RX and my truck would use the same oil so I can buy in more bulk. Now she needs 5w-20 and I still use 5w-30.

Are you misreading this thread? Either 5w20 OR 5w30 is now acceptable oil for the RX330. You can still buy your oil in bulk.

Until Lexus changes the oil filler cap and issues a supplement to the owners manual you are good with either oil grade. I'd say that in hot temperatures >100°F, I'd prefer to have 5w30 in the crankcase.

The owners manual is your bible.

I did notice that WalMart was selling a 5 quart jug of 100% synthetic Pennzoil Platinum recently for $20 with a $15 rebate from Pennzoil.

Rebate good through November: http://www.pennzoil.com/documents/PZ...nline_form.pdf

Hard to find this stuff for a buck a quart.
