I successfully removed the caps by following the instructions posted in this chat. But I was unable to put the caps back on after I was done.

Took my car to the dealership and they explained that you have to make sure that yellow button thing is inserted into the cap, and then pop the caps back onto the car. Not sure if this happens in every case... But the yellow "buttons" stayed mounted on the roof after I removed the black caps. Just an FYI to anyone that might be struggling with the same thing..
