Default Strange hum/sound from rear

Hey all, have any of you heard a strange hum coming from the back somewhere while driving? It sounds almost like when you blow across the top of a plastic bottle. My dealer checked it out awhile back and said the bearings were fine and that it was the aftermarket (probably cheap) brakes on the back. The noise is not constant but persistent in coming and going.

I have checked the exhaust and it seems solid and not to be touching anything that would cause this. I also examined the gas tank shield and saw it was the updated part that has the rubber that insulated that part per a TSB. My rotors are getting warped so I will change them out to either Lexus parts or top of the line Raybestos rotors and pads.

I guess if it doesn't get worse I can live with it but it would be great to fix it.

i have the same noise, my wheel bearings are fine and the tires are ok. i will know for sure when i put the winters on in a few weeks.

as for brakes making that noise, i dont see it unless they are applied while it makes the noise. and a warped rotor wont give you noise, just a vibration when braking.

unfortunately i think the noise is part of the vehicle

Try changing position of the cross bars on the roof rack. Sometimes they start humming in the wind and moving them forward of back helps.

Thanks for the responses. I will try moving the cross bars. It doesn't seem like the noise originiates from there but my ears could be playing tricks on me. Can the cross bars be removed?

I too found it odd the service tech would mention the brakes. He did not try to sell me new brakes as the pads looked ok, and he said they used microphones to try to pinpoint the noise. Either way, I will replace them soon as I get vibration when braking.

I will report back after changing the pads and rotors, but I have my doubts that is the source of the noise.

I shaved my roof top to completely get rid of the hum. Roof racks are off, and it looks good....
