go to the stores and try them out,
make sure the liner is removable so you can toss it in the washer.
biggest thing is to make sure you buy a 3 stage car seat (stages are based on age weight and height) so by buying a 3 stage car seat, you have a car seat from the time your baby is new(20 lbs or so), till they no longer need to be in a seat.
for the period till they are 20 lbs or so (ie rear facing) make sure you buy a stroller which comes with the car seat attachment, (most do) this means that the part the baby goes in sits in the car seat bracket as well as the stroller, very convenient
oh yeah, safest place is in the middle seat (also the most annoying to put the baby in it

I bought Maxi Cosi micro infant car seat for my new born in 2008, I also bought the matching Perle Stroller so the car seat can snap into the receiver, the car seat is very well made the cover comes off easily it support babies up to 22lbs. The stroller is a life saver, small enough to maneuver around and the size is perfect even for traveling. I recently upgraded to the Recaro Signo G2 which supports baby from 5lbs -70lbs and is both forward and backward facing seat, it does not snap into the stroller but it's super comfortable for my 13months old son and it's recline-able with adjustable headrest for the shoulder straps, very safe and very reliable, the cover comes off too. I only paid
$215, free shipping no sales tax via online shopping, retail goes for $299.99 + tax
fyi, Maxi-Cosi micro infant car seat retail $169.99 at Baby r us (buy it when they gfive you a 10% discount coupon) The Maxi Cosi Perle stroller cost retail $179.99 I used a 15% coupon they sent us and got a good deal on it. So all this to give you a better idea
I got a headache when I first looked at strollers and car seats. Good luck with your research, make sure you have all 3 items at your baby registry, you never know who is in a good mood and get you a stroller or car seat !!!

just giving you a headsup that those all-in-one convertible seats are pretty heavy, and are a pain to remove to/from vehicle. We went with a nice Graco infant seat that was easy to remove and carry the baby around in, until he grew out of it. Now we're sporting Brittax stage 2 seat...

Both the Maxi Cosi and Recaro was took less than 5 mins to install, seconds to remove.
In our parent's group parents that bought Graco product complaint about how cheap the product was and wished they bought a Maxi Cosi instead. Just my 2 cents
