a better question is "Are A/C components covered" the refrigereant will be fine, its what is letting it out is the problem.

and yes, it should be covered under your basic warranty or extended

Yes, I think it would be covered if there's an issue with the A/C system like Kiwi said. I had the compressor on my '99 covered under extended warranty.

whether its warranty or not, make sure you get them to put dye in the system. this way if you ever have a problem again, its already in there, and you might be able to find the problem yourself saving a diagnostic fee
