Rattling Noise??

THAT rattle...
When I talked to a neighbor who also has a 2005 RX330 and mentioned that maddening rattle from the rear, he immediately opened the hatch, depressed the tonneau cover latches and said let him know if it fixed it. It did. Note you DON'T need the latches in the up position for the tonneau cover to work; all the down position does is disable the auto retract feature. But I like the auto retract function, and I'll see if I can get the dealer to make the permanent fix for me. Thanks guys!

I did contact lexus hq first, they wanted me to have the dealer inspected first, if any problems call 800-255-3987, I have made an appointment this friday afternoon with the dealer will keep you posted.

You need the latches in that position to use the tonneau cover. However, pushing in the latches to prevent the rattle is not something you should have to do. Lexus has a repair to fix this problem. Even though your Lexus may be out of factory warranty the dealer most likely would repair this at no charge, because it is a known problem. This is information from the Lexus Repair Order on my 2007 RX.

I just did get finished working on my 2007 RX (we call it the "rattler"). I had it to the dealer three times for rattles in the back, one fix was for them to put a bunch of leather conditioner between the split seat sections (covered under warranty). They charged Lexus for 1 full bottle of leather conditioner (~$25 at Lexus parts) used maybe a tenth of it and didnt even give me the remainder. Their other "fix" was the felt at the back hatch.
The rattles have gotten so annoying I finally decided to take matters into my own hands. I solved it with mine by buying some velcro "felt" and installing it at locations in the trunk sections where I could find looseness. One area was the prop up rod for the jack and lug wrench floor cover. I then had to add some to the two small compartments at the back of the jack and lug wrench cover where the "floor" rests on the plastic wells. The last thing I addressed was the ever popular retractable cover. Remove the cover bar, install some very small sections of the felt under the bar where it rests in the supports and on the front of the bar. So far no more rattles. Hard to say what will pop up once our warm weather comes around again.
Except for the rattles, 41,000 trouble free miles. The original Goodyear tires were total garbage and got to the point of hydroplaning to the point of very scary (still had tread left - above the wear bars) and no uneven wear. New Michelins at 40K made a substantial difference in the ride/handling of this fine (now rattle free) machine.
