But since I've read a lot of bad comments about the RX reliability,I'm having 2nd thoughts.Especially concerning the transmission.From comments I've read,seems some RX's last a long time,others don't.
The RX is reliable but, as with any vehicle, care and maintenance plays a major role. You can find bad comments on any vehicle out there and always have to consider your sources.

Logical? Common sense? Are you aware of the towing capacity of the RX? It's not designed to haul heavy trailers.
I'll be looking for the right deal to come along on the RX.I don't think all RX's are lemons.But there are a lot of owners who swear they'll never buy another Lexus because of the RX.But they probably didn't keep them serviced like they should.The only reason I ever got into Lexus is due to my back condition from the Army.The LS400 seat is the most comfortable I've sat in due to the lumbar support.
I have to do a lot of driving to the VA hospital for treatment and the LS400 sure helps my back...I have an outside ambient temperature sensor ordered to fix an issue with the outside temp gauge reading -22 degrees.It is affecting the A/C temp control unit.I have to keep the A/C on the coldest to keep the A/C light on.If I go to 65 or 66 degrees on my side,the A/C light goes off.If I switch back to cold,the A/C light comes back on.And the air at full blast.It's aggravating but I'll get it fixed.If I set the passenger side to 65 or 66,the fan will drop a couple speeds and the A/C light will stay on.It's crazy how it's running.After 21 years,I had to take the car to an A/C shop last Monday and they put 4 ounces of freon in.And they said it has no leaks,thank goodness.
But the engine and trans. has been so reliable over the years,knock on wood.I paid over $43K for my '95 in '98 and I intend on getting every pennies worth out of it.I'll keep on driving it 'til the wheels fall off.My brothers are still trying to get me to sell it after 18 years.They're crazy alright.
On the RX,it really doesn't matter about the color.As long as it's been taken good care of.If I ever find the right one. Sorry about the absence of paragraphs in my 1st post.And I know better than that.I just got carried away.
Dont worry about no paragraphs I like writing without periods or capitals or other extraneous marks getting your point across is what matters but I don't like hearing that rx330 have bad transmissions or bad anything cuz I just bought an 05 and am facing a timing belt repair for 1100 including water pump and the heat shield just fell off the radiator has two tiny leaks I replaced tires brakes and rotors all around battery wiper blades and it needs a new key but my hesitation in getting the major timing belt done is that there is a hesitation when I press the gas pedal from a stop or whe I am moving around a curve and I am wondering if this is a safety mechanism Lexus put in or if this is a precursor to more severe costly problems any comments insights would be helpful and other than that the car runs like a charm
You can get a better deal for parts(timing belt,water pump)etc. on the Bay.Do try and find OEM parts though.I would take it to the best mechanic I could find and get that $1,100 down.I found two shops in my area that would do it for around $600.One shop only charged $450.00 for a belt change about 3 years ago on a '93 LS400.But I got the parts off the Bay for a lot less and OEM parts.
All I can say on the hesitation is to call a Lexus dealership and mention some of the other problems.My mechanic,Mike Coleman in Centerville,Ga. may be able to help with advice and a diagnosis.It doesn't cost a thing to call him.He is probably the best mechanic in Ga. in my opinion.He's very smart and honest.His # is (478)953-4453.Good Luck
You can usually find a place that specializes in Toyota/Lexus and pay much less. I use a place in the greater Denver area and below is their standing special for timing belts. If you need a pump, they add about $200-$250 to the price; these are OEM parts. The moral of the story, shop around.
My 04 is a one owner with 86k miles on it. Regular maintenance done either at a Lexus or Toyota dealer. Compared to the 2 Toyota vehicles I bought in 2000 and 2006 the RX is the worst in terms of repairs. The Toyota I bought in 2000 had a dome light cover fall off-that's it-over 6 years and 90k miles. The 06 hasn't needed anything other than routine maintenance. The RX has had a new dashboard, multiple brake light switches, side mirror actuators, and other issues I didn't expect.
Still a nice vehicle but surprisingly not as well made as my other vehicles.
I have a 2004 RX330 with 180,000 miles on it. Most reliable and comfortable car I've ever owned. Other than routine maintenance and changing the timing belt, I've had few significant repairs. My most expensive repair was replacing all of the bearings at 160,000 miles. I live in Michigan, and our roads are in terrible shape, thus I think they were prematurely destroyed. I suspect the car has at least another 100,000 miles to go. (My next best car - I drove a 1984 Volvo to 320,000 miles, then sold it.)
People,will you stop worrying about the friggin timing belt!! their good to at least 120k. Do some searches on here,many that had them done before 120k said they still looked new!
LOL @ timing belt. It is true though, I just had mine inspected by Lexus dealer and was informed that it should still be good for another 30k miles.. My 04 AWD currently has 78k. I'm the 2nd owner. However, I already purchased the timing belt kit together with the waterpump just to be prepared. Overall, the car drives IMMACULATE and i'm very happy.
Our 2004 RX330 has been one of the most reliable cars we have ever owned. Just turned 210,000 miles this past weekend.
DAYUMMM! that's awesome man!... justified the reason why i got one recently lol. Ofcourse with proper maintenance (oil changes etc).. should last a VERY long time.

According to time, the timing belt is 12 years old, personally, I wouldn't wait another 30k miles if you already have the parts.
Peace of mind for the next 90,000 miles is priceless....
Lexuswiz recently replaced his timing belt (which showed some cracks in the belt), his RX has similar millage & is one year newer.
I also replaced mine with 137,000 miles ( 05 RX330), that was a priority repair when I first purchased the RX, the timing belt was cracked from edge to edge all over the belt.
